URGENT TRAFFIC UPDATE!
Thank you to all our traffic supervisors who come every week to ensure we can use the lot for pick up and drop-off. So far, thankfully, we have been blessed with no real issues. However, we have had more close calls due to speed and the impatience of drivers rushing to enter and exit. Some are not parents, so we ask you to remind all pick up drivers, to PLEASE slow down in the drop-off zones. We have tightened the drop-off spaces to allow greater visibility and slower exits as students may be walking between cars and are not easily seen. We are also reminding all students to ONLY walk behind cones and not in between cars. As school let’s out very quickly, we are asking that larger trucks and SUVs park in the second row and closer to the gym as it is harder to turn out into the driveway from the school doors. The drop offs take less than 10 minutes from start to exit, so please time accordingly. Also, we are asking the morning drivers NOT to STOP AND EXIT THEIR CARS! Students should be ready to exit on the right side of vehicles and enter the safety of the coned areas. There may also be students exiting the gym in the morning from practices and the lower hall at the end of the day due to art or music classes. Therefore, please be careful passing cars or reversing during drop offs as there may be students exiting. Again, thank you to all our amazing volunteer supervisors who come weekly. FEBRUARY 1, 2024 – MORNING CARE
Thank you to all the families that completed our Morning Care Survey last week. Morning Care will start on Thursday, February 1st, and will run from 7:30 a.m. – 8:30 a.m. This service will be provided on a drop in basis. The cost will be $8.00 per day per child or $30.00 per week per child, if all five days are attended. If you are interested in using this service and have not completed the survey, please email the office (office@myolosschool.com) so we can forward you the Morning Care Club Guidelines & Expectations. This needs to be signed and returned to the office before you may use this service. Maximum occupancy for this program is 20 children.

FEBRUARY 1 & 2, 2024 – OLS BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT & CONCESSION
Gr. 5 Basketball Teams will be participating in an all-day tournament at Our Lady of Sorrows. Details will be provided by coaches.

Gr. 5 Girls: Thursday, February 1st

Gr. 5 Boys: Friday, February 2nd

The concession will be open during the tournament on both days. For those that pre-ordered concession items, please pick them up during the tournament. No need to worry if you did not pre-order as there will be additional items available for cash purchase.

FEBRUARY 14, 2024 LENT BOXES
Lent boxes will be sent home on Wednesday, February 14th (Ash Wednesday) (Grades 1-7). All boxes will be collected after Easter Monday, Tuesday, April 2nd. We ask that ALL students label their box with their name and house colour. We also ask that you print the amount collected on the box. Please use this opportunity to encourage your child to give alms (to do charitable work).

FEBRUARY 5, 2024 – MANDATORY CONFIRMATION MEETING
A confirmation meeting will be held on Monday, February 5th at 7:00 p.m. in the gym. This is a mandatory meeting for Sponsors and Confirmandi.

FEBRUARY 12 – 16, 2024 – CATHOLIC SCHOOL’S WEEK
Monday, February 12th is the start of Catholic Schools’ Week. This week is designed to promote the many aspects of the Catholic school community. This community helps guide its people in their devotion to the Faith.  By celebrating different facets of Our Lady of Sorrows School, we continue to strengthen the bonds that are the foundation of this Catholic community. The school will be having a variety of activities.   Please have your child bring $5.00 to participate in these activities. The donations will be divided up between a variety of charities. 

  • February 12th (Monday) – Jersey Day
    • Students may come dressed in their favourite sports jersey.
    • Staff and Gr. 7 student Floor Hockey Game.
  • February 13th (Tuesday) – Red Colour Day
    • Students may come dressed in Red.
    • One of our school families is generously donating a pizza lunch on this day, as a thank you to all our wonderful students and for all they do in support of each other! All students will receive 2 free pieces of pizza on this day. Please pack any additional snacks or drinks as needed.

FEBRUARY 14, 2024 – ASH WEDNESDAY GRADE 3 MASS
Ash Wednesday Mass will be held on Wednesday, February 14th at 9:00 a.m. Parents and grandparents are welcome to join us. Students must be in full uniform.

FEBRUARY 15 AND 16, 2024 CATHOLIC EDUCATOR’S CONFERENCE – NO SCHOOL
All teachers will be attending the Catholic Educator’s Conference on Thursday, February 15th and Friday, February 16th.  The school will be closed for these two days.

FEBRUARY 19, 2024 – FAMILY DAY – NO SCHOOL
There will be no school on Monday, February 19th due to the Family Day holiday.

FEBRUARY 25, 2024 –  FAMILY MASS
The Family Mass will be on Sunday, February 25th at 11:30 a.m.  We invite all families from OLS to celebrate the Family Mass. This is a wonderful way for our families to attend and participate in the required Sunday liturgy.

2024 SCHOOL DONATION TAX RECEIPTS
The 2023 school donation tax receipts are in the process of being prepared.  The receipts will be going home with the oldest child prior to February 28, 2024. We will notify our parents when they are being sent home. School tax receipts are claimed as a charitable donation NOT tuition.

MARCH 6, 2024 – IMPORTANT DATE! MANDATORY ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
The Mandatory General Meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 6th at 6:45 p.m. in the school gym.  A member from each family must attend this mandatory meeting or a fine will be charged as per the Policy Handbook on Page 12 of your child’s Agenda.  If you are unable to attend due to illness, vacation, etc., a letter must be sent addressed to the Parish Education Committee explaining why you will be absent from the meeting.

2024-2025 SCHOOL REGISTRATION PACKAGES
Registration packages will be distributed at the Mandatory Annual General Meeting being held on Wednesday, March 6th. Please note that packages will not be given out prior to the meeting.

REMINDERS

ONGOING BOTTLE DRIVE – RETURN-IT EXPRESS
The Grade 7 Fundraising Committee is collecting bottles again this year. It’s easy! Simply place your empties in clear bags and drop them off at any “Return-It Express” depot (link to locations here). The school’s account is under our main phone number – 604-253-2434.

PRESCHOOL 2024-2025 REGISTRATION
We are accepting applications for 3 and 4 year old preschool. If you have a child born in the year 2020 or 2021, please complete and return the attached Preschool New Student Pre-Registration Request Form.
